Different Types of Lipstick & What They Do.

After reaching the end of this article I'm hoping that I have helped you to navigate your way around the makeup aisles a little easier!

Sometimes it can be hard to choose which product is best for you when the market is so saturated with different types of lipsticks in different formulas and different shades. After reaching the end of this article I’m hoping that I have helped you to navigate your way around the makeup aisles a little easier!

First let’s talk about texture & finish…

Matte Lipstick

Matte lipsticks are great for staying power, however they can be quite drying to your lips so it’s important to look after them before and after application & wear. They usually contain Kaolin (also known as clay) which is a primary ingredient for it’s staying power as it leaves no shine and no grease on the surface.

Tip: Prep your lips for a matte formula by exfoliating with sugar and honey and buff off with a warm cloth, then saturate your lips in balm or oil and leave to sink in before application.

Long Wearing Lipstick

Long wearing lipsticks are those that claim they have the upmost staying power which can stand the test of time through the kisses, the wine and everyday wear. However that’s usually not the case, personally I would prefer to use a stain as these product can cause dry, chapped & cracked lips which is never a good look!

Sheer/Stain Lipstick

Thank the lord for the new formulations of stain lipsticks, before this happened they were only known to last for an hour or so before disappearing in to nothing. However all of that has changed in recent years, some of my favourite lip products are actually stains from Benefit (if you haven’t tried them yet, I suggest you do).

A stain type of lipstick may not be for you if you do prefer a full coverage lip colour, however if you like natural/glowy looks then these products would be perfect for you!

Moisturising Lipsticks

These are perfect for those with dry lips as they tend to contain conditioning ingredients such as Shea Butter. They can wear off easy dependant on the pigmentation and exact formula of the product you purchase, Loreal and Rimmel are good drugstore brands to try for this type of product.

Tip: if you purchase a pale colour and are worried about wear time, you can try this little trick. Apply your first coat liberally to your lips and set with a small amount of translucent powder, then apply a this second layer. This will ensure that the product lasts longer without drying your lips.
